Henry V CHICAGO

September 26th, 2024

Henry V is the second History play we’ve staged this year at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, following the success of Richard III in February 2024. Our production has borrowed from our previous versions of the play going back thirty years, but now, in collaboration with an outstanding company of Chicago-based and ‘out of town’ actors and creatives, has incorporated fresh reference points, ideas, music and images.

‘The strength of this production is not in the play’s best-known sequences, but in what really is an exceptional ensemble cast, most playing multiple roles and bringing lively personality to all. Escalante is a rakish Dauphin, but also an immensely likable Mistress Quickley (in a beautiful rag of a wedding dress by designer Michael Pavelka).’   Chicago Sun-Times

‘The outstanding design is anything but wasted on the cast.’   Talkin’ Broadway

‘Impeccable design and cleverly crafted. Impressive detail from Scenic Designer Michael Pavelka that consumes Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theater.’   Buzz Center Stage

‘This Henry V looks and definitely feels like a contemporary reincarnation circa 2024.’   The Fourth Walsh
